Few people know or remember that Baltimore was once home to a small but mighty Chinatown—a Middle Kingdom in the Mid-Atlantic. Today, the traces of our historic Chinatown have become more invisible, with few signs remaining. Chinatowns throughout America have been struggling to survive since the rise of anti-Chinese hate since 2020; this project seeks to shed light on our very local home. Traversing between “Past” and “Present,” this project traces out the contours of Baltimore’s historic Chinatown and examines its evolution and revitalization efforts today as AAPI residents continue to engage with Chinese history, culture, and with each other. The 300 and 400 blocks of Park Ave of the historic Chinatown have transformed into Little Ethiopia, another thriving immigrant hub. While we remember our past, let us also celebrate the present, and embrace the future.
